Weekly Newsletter- 18th January 2026

Dear Friends,

Today is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint of the Week – Saint John Ogilvie, S.J. (1579 – 1615) – Monday, 19th January

John was born in Banffshire, Scotland into a noble Scots family of mixed Presbyterian and Catholic allegiance. John was reared as a Calvinist. At the age of fifteen he was sent aboard by his father to have the benefits of a French Calvinist education. Ironically, things did not work out as John’s father had planned. John became a Roman Catholic. He entered the Jesuits in 1599 and was ordained priest in Paris in1610. Initially, he was stationed in Rouen. He heard of the perilous state of Catholics in Scotland and asked to be sent there. In 1613, he returned to Scotland disguised as a horse dealer under the name John Watson. He was active in ministry in Edinburgh and Glasgow but was then betrayed to the Protestant archbishop, arrested and tortured. He was brought to trial, condemned and executed on a trumped-up charge of high treason. His body was buried outside the city of Glasgow in a place used for the burial of criminals. John was beatified by Pope Pius X1 in 1929 and canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1976. One can only marvel at the depth of faith of these martyrs in the 16th and 17thcenturies.
