Weekly Newsletter - 5th October 2025

Dear Friends,

Today is the27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint of the Week – Saint Teresa of Avila – Wednesday, 15th October

Born in Avila, Spain in 1515, Teresa was naturally gifted and of a lively disposition.  She entered the Carmelite convent of the Incarnation in Avila when she was about twenty. It was a large and easy-going community where the nuns could keep their own property and have their own personal servants!  When she was middle-aged Teresa resolved to found a convent under the original and strict form of the Carmelite Rule.  This movement was to be called the ‘Discalced Carmelites’.  Teresa founded seventeen convents in all throughout Spain.  Under her influence, and with the help of St. John of the Cross, the reform movement spread to a male branch of the Order. Teresa wrote several spiritual classics: The Life; The Way of Perfection; The Book of the Foundations and The Interior Castle. Teresa died in 1582.

The Discalced Carmelite friars are in Clarendon St in Dublin and there are a number of convents of enclosed Carmelite nuns throughout Ireland.

 Reflection of Teresa of Avila

Let nothing trouble you

Let nothing frighten you.

All is fleeting,

God alone is unchanging.

Patience everything obtains.

Who possesses God

Wants nothing.

God alone suffices.

Saturday Morning Talks

Next Saturday, 11th, 10.00 – 12.00 I will be giving a talk on the Beguines.

The Beguines were a fascinating lay women’s spiritual movement in 13th/14th century Europe.  A parallel movement still exists in Vancouver in Canada.

There will be six more sessions in this series. Further talks will focus on the life and spirituality of Francis of Assisi; Meister Eckhart; Erasmus; Martin Luther; Thomas Merton; Roger of Taizé.
