Dear Friends,

Today is the18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint of the Week – St. Edith Stein (Teresa Benedicta a Croce) – Saturday, 9th August

Edith Stein was born in Breslau (then Germany, now Wroclow, Poland) in 1891. She came from a Jewish family. Very academically gifted, she studied philosophy at the Universities of Breslau, Gottingen and Freiburg. Initially, she considered herself to be an atheist but through encounters with some Christian academic friends, Edith became a Roman Catholic herself in 1922. Edith’s Jewish mother never spoke to her again. Edith translated some of the letters of Cardinal Newman and some of Thomas Aquinas into German. She lectured on behalf of women’s suffrage. Her lecturing tours took her to Austria, Switzerland and Paris. She entered the Carmelite Convent in Cologne in 1933. She was encouraged by her prioress to continue her philosophical writing. After Kristallancht (theNazi attack on Jewish businesses and families), Edith transferred to a Carmelite convent in Echt in Holland. However, the Nazis followed and arrested Edith and her sister, Rosa on 2 August, 1942, simply because they were of Jewish extraction. They were put to death on 9 August in a gas chamber in Auschwitz. Edith was canonised by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1998 and declared a Patroness of Europe.

Reflection of St. Edith Stein, OCD.

God is here in these moments and can give us in a single instant exactly what we need. Then the rest of the day can take its course, under the same effort and strain, perhaps, but in peace. And when night comes and we look back on the day and see how fragmentary everything has been, and how much we planned has gone undone, and all the reasons we have to be embarrassed and ashamed: let us take everything exactly as it is, put it in God’s hands and leave it with Him. Then we will be able to rest in Him – really rest – and start the next day as a new life. Amen.
