Weekly Newsletter - 31st August 2025

Dear Friends,

Today is the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint of the Week Pope St. Gregory(540-604) – Wednesday, 3rd September

Gregory was the chief civil magistrate of the city of Rome. He became a monk when he was 35. He was papal envoy to Constantinople. He was elected Pope, the first monk to be chosen for this office. He was Pope for 14 years at a time of great difficulty and disorder. The Lombards were devastating northern Italy in 592 but Gregory negotiated treaties with them as well as with the Franks and Visigoths. He sent missionaries to England, including St. Augustine of Canterbury. Over 800 of Gregory’s letters have survived. He called himself ‘the servant of the servant of God’, a designation used by popes ever since.
