Weekly Newsletter - 24th May 2024

Dear Friends,

Today is Pentecost Sunday

We might pray in a special way on this Feast of the Coming of the Holy Spirit that this same Spirit would touch the hearts and minds of the leaders of the United States and Iran to be open to a true and lasting peace. We pray also for other areas of conflict and division in our world.

Saint of the Week. – St. Philip Neri– Tuesday, 26th May

Born in Florence in 1515, he left for Rome at the age of eighteen. He lived there as a layman for seventeen years, at first earning his living as a tutor, writing poetry and studying philosophy and theology. He founded a brotherhood of laymen who met together for prayer and to give help to pilgrims and to the sick. This developed into the great Trinity Hospital. In 1551, Philip was ordained priest and was especially gifted in the hearing of confessions. Philip had an oratory built where religious addresses and discussions took place. There were special musical events from which comes the word oratoria. Other young priests joined Philip and he formed them into the Congregation of the Oratory of which Cardinal Saint John Henry Newman would later be a member. Philip was especially noted for his sense of fun and good humour. “Laughter’ is a word which frequently appears in his writings. Though of a completely different disposition, Philip and Ignatius Loyola were good friends. Today, we have the famous ‘Oratory Churches’ in London and Birmingham where the ‘Oratorians’ minister.
