Weekly Newsletter- 19th October 2025

Dear Friends,

Today is the29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint of the Week – St. John de Brebeuf, S.J. (1593-1647) – 19th October

Born in Normandy, John entered the Jesuits in 1617. He was ordained in 1622. He went to work among the Huron Indians in Canada. He spent the first two years learning the Huron language. Initially, there were very few converts. The rains failed and the Huron sorcerers blamed the Jesuits! John gathered the people, recited some prayers and the heavens opened. These “black robed” priests were seen to work miracles. Then there was a smallpox epidemic and again the Hurons blamed the Jesuits. They were determined that the Jesuits were to die. John endured a particularly horrendous martyrdom at the hands of the Iroquois Indians, enemies of the Hurons. John was beatified on June 24th, 1925 by Pope Pius XI, along with seven other Jesuit companions, all of them martyrs. They were canonized on June 29th, 1930. The Irish novelist, Brian Moore wrote a novel entitled Black Robe depicting the life and martyrdom of these Jesuits. This novel was subsequently made into a film.
