Saint of the Week – Saint Boniface –Friday, 5th June

Born in Crediton, Devon, England around 675 AD. Until he was about forty, he was a monk, first at Exeter and then at Nursling, near Southampton; his chief concern in those days was study, teaching and preaching. He expounded the Bible, and compiled the first Latin grammar in England. In 718, Boniface went to take the Gospel to the heathen tribes in Germany. Three times he journeyed to Rome to report on progress to the pope, and on a second visit, he was made a bishop, eventually establishing his episcopal see at Mainz. To help him in his work, he enlisted other English missionaries from Wessex, women as well as men. In 732, AD, Pope Gregory III made him an archbishop. When Boniface was seventy, he still had no thought of rest, and turned his attention to Holland. There he was martyred in Frieslandin about 754 AD. Boniface is much better remembered in Germany than among his fellow countrymen. His tomb at Fulda (central Germany), where he founded a monastery, is revered as a sacred place.

ENCYCLICAL LETTER MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS on safeguarding human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence.
Pope Leo presented his first social encyclical on the 135th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s landmark encyclical Rerum Novarum. At the presentation, PopeLeo XIV urged that artificial intelligence remain at the service of humanity, cautioning against technologies that promote domination, exclusion, and war.

Let us remain faithful to the truth! Living amid incessant flows of information, opinions and images, we know how easy it can be to influence decisions and preferences through increasingly sophisticated algorithms…Fidelity to the truth requires integrating the possibilities offered by technology within a frameworkmarked by wisdom, which is capable of safeguarding both the dignity of each person and the future of our common home.”.
