SAINT OF THE WEEK – ST. OLIVER PLUNKETT – TUESDAY, JULY 1ST
Born in Co. Meath in 1625, Oliver went to study for the priesthood in Rome and was ordained there in 1654. He remained for twelve years in the papal service. He was sent back to Ireland as Archbishop of Armagh. The policies of Oliver Cromwell had brought the country to a state of religious disarray. Oliver Plunkett had to work under very difficult conditions. In 1678, Titus Oates ‘discovered’ anon-existent ‘popish plot’ involving Oliver. Oliver was arrested in Ireland but was put on trial in London, charged with conspiracy to subvert the realm. Chiefly on the evidence of a renegade priest, he was convicted and sentenced to death. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn – a horrendous death. Oliver’s head is in a reliquary in St. Peter’s Church in Drogheda and other relics are enshrined at the Benedictine Abbey of Downside in England.
