Dear Friends,
Today is the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Saint of the Week - St Teresa of Avila (1515-82) – Thursday 15th October
Born in Avila in Spain, Teresa entered the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation at the age of 20. Initially, Teresa struggled with prayer. She found the assigned times for prayer in the convent to be very long! Later, Teresa found it a great help to meditate on the humanity of Jesus, especially on Jesus’ vulnerability during the Passion. She felt that Jesus needed her.
She grew in her life of prayer which she described as “nothing else but an intimate sharing between friends; it means taking time to be alone with him whom we know loves us.” Along with St. John of the Cross, Teresa founded the Discalced Carmelite Order. Here, in Dublin, we have Discalced Carmelites in Clarendon Street and in ‘Avila’ on Morehampton Road. Teresa was canonized on 12 March, 1622, along with St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Francis Xavier and St. Philip Neri. Pope Paul VI conferred on Teresa the title ‘Doctor of the Church’ in 1970 because of her classic teachings on prayer.
