Saint of the Week St. Albert Hurtado, S.J. (1901 – 1952) – Monday, 18th August

Born in Viña delMar, Chile, Albert came from an impoverished family but won a scholarship to the Jesuit College in Santiago. He studied law at the Catholic University of Santiago and entered the Jesuits in 1923 at the age of 22. He studied philosophy in Córdoba, Argentina and theology in Barcelona, Spain and in Louvain, Belgium. He gained a doctorate in pedagogy and then returned to Chile. He became Professor of Pedagogy in the Catholic University. He devoted much of his time to the care of poor youth and abandoned children on the streets of Santiago. He found homes for the poor children called Hogar de Cristo (The Home of Christ). He launched a public housing scheme in Chile. By the time of his premature death, he was a national hero in Chile. On his deathbed, he is reputed to have said, “The Master calls me and here I am, ready and happy. ”Albert was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on 29th October, 2005.

 Reflection of St. Albert Hurtado

“Isn’t it time that we realized this ideal of our faith, to give a home to the homeless? Christ goes about our streets in the person of so many sufferers. Christ is living under the bridges in the person of so many children…Christ has no home!”

DAY OF PRAYER AND REFLECTION FORGAZA – AUGUST 24

“I invite all parishes in the Archdiocese to dedicate Sunday 24th August as a special day of prayer and reflection for Gaza and for a renewed commitment by the international community for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. This appeal, which I am making in conjunction with Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh (whose letter is available here), unites us in prayer before God, crying out for an end to all the terror and violence being perpetrated with tragic results for all.

As Pope Leo said, addressing theyoung people gathered for the Jubilee of Youth in Rome, and encouraging them intheir desire to transform our world for the good: ‘We are with the young peopleof Gaza, we are with the young people of Ukraine, with those of every landbloodied by war. My young brothers and sisters, you are the sign that adifferent world is possible: a world of fraternity and friendship, whereconflicts are not resolved with weapons but with dialogue.’ (Pope Leo XIV,Angelus, 3rd August 2025).

May we all be a sign, by our prayer and action, that a different world is possible, and that a route to peace and reconciliation can and must be found through dialogue”.
