Weekly Newsletter - 8th June 2025

Dear Friends,

Today is Pentecost Sunday. Today we recall when the frightened apostles, hidden away in the upper room, were visited by the Holy Spirit and given the courage to go out fearlessly to preach the Good News throughout the world.  We pray today that the Holy Spirit would give courage to each one of us in bearing witness to our faith.

Just to recall that the Novena to the Sacred Heart will begin on Thursday 19th June and finish on Friday 27th June.  Our preacher this year will be Fr. Vincent Sherlock, a priest of the diocese of Achonry.  Fr. Vincent is a regular contributor to the Sacred Heart Messenger

The Front Office is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am – 1.00pm and 1.30pm – 4.30pm.

Saturday from 10.00am – 2.00pm; Sunday9.00am – 12.30pm

Saint of the Week – Saint Anthony of Padua – Friday, 13th June

Born in Lisbon of a noble family in1195.  In 1210, he joined the Augustinian Canons in Lisbon. Until the age of 21, he pursued theological studies in Coimbra, Portugal.  Fired with adesire to be a missionary, he joined the Franciscans, changing his name from Ferdinand to Anthony.  He was sent to work among the Moslems inMorocco.  His health failed him and he went to Italy where he showed a remarkable gift for preaching.  He also taught theology in Italy and France.  The popular statues of Anthony do not do him justice.  He was strong and fearless.  He castigated those who oppressed the poor and defenceless. In his lifetime, he was known as ‘the hammer of heretics’. He died near Padua, Italy in 1231 and was canonized the following year in1232!  Because of his Biblical and theological knowledge, he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1946 by Pope Pius XII.  Anthony is chiefly invoked for the return of lost property, possibly because of an incident where a Franciscan novice ran away with a prayer book which Anthony was using. Because of an alarming apparition, the novice was forced to return the book!
