Saint of the Week St. John Chrysostom (347 – 407)
John Chrysostom was born in Antioch in Turkey. He was baptized as an adult. He joined the clergy of Antioch and gained an ever-increasing reputation as a preacher. In 398, he was elected Archbishop of Constantinople. He attacked the wealthy for the misuse of their wealth to the detriment of the poor. He thus incurred the wrath of the Empress Eudoxia. The Emperor Arcadius sent John into exile in Armenia. He was reinstated by popular demand only to be exiled again. He died from being forced-marched in the winter chill. He is honoured as one of the four great Greek doctors of the Church. John’s preaching on the Eucharist is especially striking.
John Chrysostom & the Eucharist
Would you honour the body of Christ? Do not despise his nakedness; do not honour him here in church clothed in silk vestments and then pass him by unclothed and frozen outside. Remember that he who said “This is my Body” and made good his words, also said, “You saw me hungry and gave me no food” and “in so far as you did it to one of these, the least among you, you did it to me.”

SEASON OF CREATION
Thisyear’s Season of Creation has as its theme “Peace with Creation”, inspired by the passage from Isaiah 32:14-18, “My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” In a world of challenges and division, marked by war and climate change, how can we as people of faith create and work towards peace with creation?
