Saint of the Week – St. Benedict – Friday, 11th July
Benedict was born in Nurcia, Umbria, Italy around 480 A.D. He was sent to Rome for his studies but he was disturbed by the profligate life of the city. He became ahermit at Subiaco. He gradually established twelve small communities in various places, culminating in the foundation of the Monastery of Monte Cassiano. He drew up a monastic rule, famous to this day. A clear idea of what sort of man he was can be gained from the text of his Rule: single-minded, a man of peace and moderation, a loving father who combined insistence on good discipline with respect for human personalities and individual capabilities. He called his Rule one for beginners, a ‘school of the Lord’s service, in which we hope to order nothing harsh or rigorous’. This simple and profound document was destined to play a considerable part in the history of Europe and in numerous monasteries of monks and nuns throughout the world today. Pope Paul VI (1963-78) declared Benedict patron of Europe. Benedict died at Monte Cassiano around 547 A.D. Wemight remember in our prayers today the Benedictine monks of Glenstal and Rostrevor and the nuns of Kylemore Abbey.
