Weekly Newsletter - 28th June 2026

Dear Friends,

Today is The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Saint of the Week – Saint Oliver Plunkett – Wednesday, July 1st

Born in Oldcastle, Co. Meath in 1625, Oliver was ordained a priest in Rome in 1654. He remained in Rome for twelve years in the papal service. He was sent back to Ireland as Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. The policies of Oliver Cromwell had brought the church in Ireland into disarray. Oliver Plunkett worked vigorously for ten years to remedy this situation. Then, in 1678, Titus Oates ‘discovered’ anon-existent ‘popish plot’ involving Oliver. He was arrested in Ireland and put on trial in London, charged with conspiring to subvert the realm. Chiefly on the evidence of a renegade priest, Oliver was convicted and sentenced to death. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn in 1681, a most barbarous death. His mutilated remains are now enshrined in St. Peter’s Church in Drogheda and at Downside Abbey in England.
