Saint of the Week – Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, S.J. (1568 – 1591) – Saturday, 21st June

Aloysius was the eldest son of the Marquis of Castiglione. Since he was the heir to the family title, his father took him on military expeditions when he was only four years old! When Aloysius was nine he was sent to live at the court of the Grand Duke Francesco de Medici to learn the customs of princely life. Intrigue and deceit abounded in this court. Aloysius was in no way attracted by this life. He received his First Communion from St. Charles Borromeo, Cardinal of Milan. For a while, Aloysius was in the retinue of the Empress Maria of Austria on her return to Spain. By this time Aloysius was convinced that the princely life was not for him. Much against his father’s wishes, Aloysius joined the Jesuits in Rome in 1585. He later began studies in theology in Rome. This was a time of severe famine and plagues in Italy. Aloysius begged alms for the plague-stricken and worked directly with the sick. He caught the plague himself and died at the age of twenty-three. Aloysius was beatified by Pope Paul V on 19 October, 1605, and canonized by Pope Benedict XIII on 31 December, 1726.
