Weekly Newsletter - 13th July 2025

Dear Friends,

Today is the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I will be absent from the afternoon of Sunday, 13th July until Tuesday22nd while helping out on a retreat for the Sisters of Charity in Drumalis Retreat Centre, Larne, Co. Down.

First Reading (Deuteronomy 30:10-14)

Moses urges the people to obey God’s law, not as something imposed from outside them, but as something that springs from deep inside themselves.

 Second Reading (Colossians 1:15-20)

A ancient Christian hymn. Paul asserts the absolute supremacy of Christ.

 Gospel (Luke 10:15-20)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan.

Saint of the Week – St. Bonaventure (c.1217-1274)

Giovanni di Fidanza was born in Umbria, Italy. He studied in the University of Paris. He joined the Franciscan Order in 1243 and then studied theology. He began teaching theology in Paris until 1257. In 1257, he was elected Minister-General of the Franciscans. In 1265, he declined the archbishopric of York, but eight years later, he was made cardinal bishop of Albano, in time to take a prominent part in the Second Council of Lyons. He died during the Council and was buried in Lyons. His personal simplicity is illustrated by the story that when his cardinal’s hat was brought to him, he told the legates to hang it on a nearby tree, as he was washing the dishes and his hands were wet and greasy! He left many important works of philosophy, theology and spirituality. He wrote the definitive life of St. Francis and a famous work entitled The Journey of the Soul to God. He was canonised in 1484by the Franciscan Pope Sixtus IV. In 1588, Pope Sixtus V declared him to be a doctor of the Church.
