Dear Friends,
Today is The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Saint of the Week – St Camillas deLellis – Tuesday 14th July
Born in Abruzzi, Italy in 1550. In his youth he was so addicted to gambling that eventually he lost everything and had to take a job as a builder’s labourer. A sermon he heard wrought a great change in him. He twice tried to join the Franciscans but had to leave because of a disease of the leg. He offered himself to the hospital of San Giacomo in Rome, of which in time he became bursar. This experience opened his eyes to the shocking state of the hospitals. He was ordained priest in 1584, having already begun to organize a congregation of priests and brothers for the care of the sick. He opened other hospitals in Naples and elsewhere. He insisted on such innovations as open windows, suitable diets, and isolation of contagious cases. His priests were always at hand to minister to the dying.. In 1607, he resigned the leadership of his order. He died in 1614 and was canonized in 1746. The Order he founded are known as the Camillians. They are famous for their red cross on their religious habits. There are about 1,100 Camillians throughout the world.

I would hope to make the talks as accessible as possible. These talks will take place on Saturday mornings from 10.00 am. to 12 noon in the John Sullivan Room. You might give it some thought over the summer. Further details later.
